UKWA Triple Crown
Bigbury
13/09/04
I am back home now from a great long weekend down at Bigbury in Devon for the
UKWA Triple Crown Open International where the wind and wave gods blessed us
enough to get three days of epic competition in a variety of conditions. From
flat and windy to onshore and waves to sideshore down the line wave riding.
Despite my physio recommending I stay off the water until the end of september I decided to compete. The first day was flat water and windy so the judges chose to run a round of freestyle. Not my strongest discipline and definately not good wqith an ankle that doesn't work properly. However I was pretty stoked with the end result as I managed to take =9th position with a mix of old school moves and no ankle bending trickery!
Friday wasn't windy so we had a day on the beach in rather wet weather.
Saturday's forecast was good and we woke to small waves and stregthening southerly winds.Throughout the day the waves built while the amatuer, youth, junior & masters were run wiht the pro fleet commencing a wave round in the afternoon. I was disapointed to get knocked out in the first round and failed to advance through the loosers bracket with David Swift and Gregg Martin taking the places. With this being my second time on the water since June I was not on top form and found my ankle a real hinderence to my performance.
Sunday's competition kicked off in similar conditions to Saturday, with wave competition all round. I was super happy to again take =9th, this time in waves, despitemy ankle's in poor shape. This gave me an overall position of 19th for the Triple Crown so far.
Now I am looking forward to the final round to be held in Tiree in October. Between now and then I will be making sure I get my ankle back in shape so that I can compete at 100% again.
